Man riding a dolphin (Homage to the Emigrant)
Poseidon, god of the Sea, has allowed the man to ride the oceans on a friendly dolphin. It is the water horse, and water, according to Thales of Miletus and the ancient Babylonians, is the source of all life.
In this delicate piece, Dali expresses solace in the open air. It is an allegory of salvation and the wandering spirit, discoverer and persistent, which the dolphin represents. It carries the man beyond the waves, beyond the reach of the dangerous cliffs, all with the intelligence and perseverance characteristic of this animal.
The cosmic-erotic significance of the dolphin was very important in the Greek sea cults. A winged figure, although not flying, Dali wanted to make the man a joyful creature.
